‘An old soul': Mother of slain congressional intern seeks justice

An off-duty Prince George’s County police officer was involved in a car crash that killed another driver Monday night on Route 301 in Maryland, police said.

Carlton Herndon, 56, of Clinton, died in the crash.

Herndon was driving a Nissan Maxima when he apparently attempted to cross northbound Route 301 about 8:40 p.m., police said. His car was struck by a Ford F-250 truck driven by Anthony Coleman, a 34-year-old Prince George’s County police officer, police said.

Herndon, a retired D.C. police detective, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coleman, of Upper Marlboro, was off duty at the time of the crash and was driving his personal vehicle, police said. He refused medical treatment.

Police believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

Coleman was placed on an administrative duty status with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Maryland State Police crash team is leading the investigation.

Witnesses of the crash are urged to contact police.
