D.C. police arrested a man who they say fired shots that killed a 3-year-old girl as she sat in a car with her family after Fourth of July fireworks. Investigators believe the shooter intentionally targeted the family’s car, the police chief said at a Friday afternoon news conference.
Charles Rucker, 24, of Southeast, was arrested Friday in Northeast after Honesty Cheadle was shot early July 5. The little girl died days later.
Rucker approached the family’s car in the 1000 block of 14th Street SE, fired multiple rounds and ran, Assistant Chief Ramey Kyle said. No one but Honesty was hurt. According to the initial investigation, he targeted the car, Chief of Police Pamela Smith said.
“This seemed to be an intended shooting. It was not one where we believe at this time that there were other individuals that were being sought at that time,” she said.
Investigators have not determined what relationship, if any, Rucker had with Honesty’s family. He’s charged with first-degree murder.
Smith said she has not spoken with Honesty’s relatives, citing the fast-moving, ongoing investigation.
“We know today’s news does not make you whole again. Nothing we can do can fill the void left by Honesty’s passing. But we do hope the arrest brings some measure of comfort to your family as you grieve,” she said.
