PGCPS superintendent received nearly $700K in agreement to step down

Prince George’s County Public Schools paid former schools superintendent Millard House II nearly $700,000 to resign, according to agreement records obtained by News4.

House agreed to step down in June after county educators cast a no-confidence vote against him during an emergency meeting, saying he ignored the concerns and needs of students. A survey of members of the Prince George’s County Educators’ Association showed more than 75% of educators lacked confidence in House’s leadership on academic direction, transportation and safety operations, and communication with educators.

House had about two years left on his four-year contract when the agreement was reached.

The county paid House two years of his salary in one lump sum, according to the agreement. His salary was $345,000, which means he received $690,000 to resign.

There was also a clause in the agreement in which he and the school system agreed not to make negative public comments about each other.

County Executive-elect Aisha Braveboy tapped Shawn Joseph to replace House for one year. The county is paying Joseph $365,000.

Joseph has an extensive work history in education and was an assistant professor at Howard University and co-director of the university’s Urban Superintendents Academy. However, his tenure as the leader of the Nashville school system was mired in controversy and he eventually agreed to leave.

According to media reports, Joseph was criticized for not properly handling multiple sexual harassment complaints made not against him but against other employees, and for securing no-bid contracts.
