Someone seen walking with a plastic training rifle on the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center campus sparked a lockdown and fears about an active shooter, authorities say.
“There is no threat to the community and the scene is secure,” Montgomery County police said after the scare Thursday morning.
Someone reported an active shooter in a parking garage in the 8900 block of Rockville Pike, police said. Officers were dispatched at about 10:25 a.m.
“The caller reported a male armed with what appeared to be a rifle in the parking garage,” police said.
Naval Support Bethesda officials said the installation was on lockdown and gates were closed to non-emergency vehicle traffic. That status was later lifted.
The person was heading to a training with the training rifle, police said.
“The individual had no malicious intent and is not being charged,” they said.
