Track work on the southern end of Metro’s Blue Line is underway in Northern Virginia – and people who live nearby say it’s keeping them awake overnight.
The Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street stations are closed, with shuttle buses replacing usual rail service.
Alexandria residents told News4 that overnight and in the early morning hours they hear power tools, blasting horns and conversations on workers’ radios.
“It’s so annoying. It’s like they must purposefully decide to do the work at like 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning,” one resident said. “They literally blast horns and stuff.”
Video shows sparks flying in the air amid the screech of equipment.
News4 asked Metro about overnight work and why it couldn’t be done during the day. The agency said they were checking on the timing.
In the same neighborhood, other residents were more understanding and said they just want the work to be done as soon as possible.
Metro said it’s trying to pack all needed work into one month so they don’t need to do two months of construction only on weekends. When it’s complete, Metro says they’ll roll out better rails, stations, signage and an overall improved trip. The work is scheduled through July 26. Go here for more info.
