Commanders activate McLaurin off PUP list as contract extension talks linger

The family of a 3-year-old girl who was shot and killed in Southeast D.C. last month is now grieving the loss of a relative who died in a hit-and-run.

Lee Clark died after someone speeding on an I-695 ramp hit him near northbound 295, investigators say. The people in the car got out and ran. Clark, a longtime D.C. resident, was 58.

Clark’s uncle Raymond Cheadle Jr. told News4 he spoke with Clark just minutes before he was killed.

“I didn’t know that was gonna be the last time I talked to him, so I said, ‘OK, I’ll catch up with you later on,’” he said.

Cheadle called Clark a few days later and he didn’t pick up.

“I didn’t even know he was dead,” he said.

Clark was a former security officer who loved fishing, sports and spending time with his family. On the night of Aug. 2, as he headed home, a 2025 blue Toyota Camry hit him, investigators said. It happened near the Anacostia pedestrian bridge. The impact killed Clark instantly, Cheadle said.

“This one here is going to be a closed casket, period. He’s in pieces,” he said.

The deadly hit-and-run comes almost a month after the family lost 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle, who died after someone shot into her family’s car after they saw Fourth of July fireworks together.

“It’s like death is all around me and I’m, like, struggling to live with a lot of stuff,” Cheadle said.

He asked anyone with relevant information on Clark’s death to contact police.

“Something has got to be done about this. It’s a tragedy and people need to be held accountable,” he said.
