Doctors seeing hand, foot and mouth disease uptick in DC-area day cares

Prince George’s County’s new executive has pledged to beautify the county by taking care of long-ignored nuisance complaints ranging from abandoned cars to overgrown trees.

Braveboy’s office is calling the new initiative “Strike Force 311” — urging residents to call in their complaints to the county’s 311 hotline.

Residents in one Hyattsville neighborhood said that for years they complained about a lot that had hundreds of tires piled up and tall weeds.

That lot was the first stop Braveboy made as she kicked off the new Strike Force program Thursday.

By Friday, it was completely cleared of the tires and weeds.

“Thank God. It was a mess over there,” a woman who lives near the empty lot told News4.

“It’s a daily, unfortunate reminder that sometimes the government just doesn’t respond fast enough. But under the Braveboy administration, we have said, ‘Enough is enough,'” Braveboy said.

Prince George’s County residents have long expressed frustration with how long it can take to get the county to clean up blighted areas. Thousands of service requests have been backlogged for years.

“In Prince George’s County, we pay some of the highest taxes in the entire region. And it’s so important that we have government services that reflect that investment,” said Prince George’s County Council Member Ed Burroughs.

The departments of permits and inspections and public works are on the job tackling more than 13,000 nuisance complaints, the county said.

Officials said it’s about building hope and pride in the community.

The Strike Force plans to work seven days a week for the next 60 days, officials said.

Some of the things residents can call 311 for include:

  •  Potholes
  •  Overgrown trees,
  •  Stubborn tree stumps
  •  Litter cleanup
