A man has been charged with murder and is accused of shooting and killing William Askew in July on Laurel Bowie Road.
Police arrested and charged James King with first and second degree murder.
“To lose him like this, it’s still mind-boggling because we don’t really know what happened,” said Keisa Vaughn, Askew’s aunt.
Askew’s loved ones are grappling with the loss of a man they say meant so much to their family.
“He was just our light,” Vaughn said. “[…] He was just full of so much love. He was a gentleman.”
Prince George’s County police say Askew was shot and killed near a gas station along Laurel Bowie Road. Askew was found in the road not too far from the scene.
For weeks, investigators worked to identify the shooting suspect. Police released surveillance video of the suspect, who can be seen riding away from the scene on a bike.
On Friday, investigators charged King, who remains in custody on a no-bond status.
“We’re still on pins and needles because we don’t know what could’ve transpired to make somebody want to roll up on a bike and just shoot someone,” Vaughn said.
Askew’s loved ones say the Prince George’s County native enjoyed spending time with his family and had an affinity for watching and playing football.
Now, his relatives say they’re trying to make sense of a profound loss that sent shockwaves through their family.
“We feel it, you know, we feel when we’re together, we feel the missing piece,” Vaughn said. “He’s like a missing puzzle piece, so we can generally feel in the atmosphere that our little is not there.”
