Green Line Metro stations close for major repairs

If you ride the Green Line in Prince George’s County, heads up for major changes in August.

The Branch Avenue, Suitland and Naylor Road Metro stations closed over the weekend and will stay closed for weeks. Later in the month, the closures will extend to the Southern Avenue and Congress Heights stations.

A Metro employee broke the news to many riders on Monday via megaphone.

Copernic Mensah was trying to make his way all the way to Tysons to get to his job at the mall selling suits.

“I really don’t want to be late,” he said.

From now until Aug. 31, the Branch Avenue, Suitland and Naylor Road stations will be closed. Then, for two weekends – Aug. 9-10 and Aug. 16-17 – the closure will extend north to the Southern Avenue and Congress Heights stations. Shuttle buses will be available.

Metro said the work will improve the tracks and signaling systems. The agency is packing all the work into four weeks instead of shutting down the stations every weekend for seven months.

To try to ease the burden of the shutdown, parking at the Branch Avenue, Suitland and Naylor Road stations will be free all month.
