Family and friends of a mother who was killed in a car crash in Prince George’s County came together on Saturday to remember her life at a vigil.
Loved ones lit candles on the ground and held white, purple and silver balloons side by side as they remembered Shaunte Canty, who lost her life on Aug. 26.
“This is actually the strongest I’ve been,” Erica Chase, Canty’s sister, said. “There has not been a day without crying. That’s my sister.”
The 35-year-old young mother’s presence and kind spirit meant the world to her mother, sister and 5-year-old daughter. They stood among a large crowd outside of Raymond Elementary School in D.C. during the vigil.
“I just want my baby back,” Carletta Chase, Canty’s mother, tearfully said.
Carletta Chase held her granddaughter close to her as Canty’s daughter spoke about how she missed her mom.
“I love my mommy because she take care of me, protect me and I miss her so much,” the daughter said.
Canty was taking her 3-year-old son with autism to a therapy appointment when police said the teen driver of a stolen car ran a red light at Martin Luther King Jr. and Sheriff Road and slammed into them.
Four teens were inside the stolen the car when it ran a red light and struck Canty’s car, police said.
The son was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He has a broken arm and leg. Carletta Chase said he was doing OK but he’s in a lot of pain.
Investigators say Seat Pleasant officers initially followed the stolen car but had stopped before the collision happened. One of the teens was taken into custody and three were taken to the hospital, according to investigators. All of the teens are between age 15 and 17. It’s unclear what charges they’ll face.
Carletta Chase and Erica Chase say each day is difficult coming to terms with Canty’s no longer with them. Carletta Chase said that they love and miss her and wants Canty to know that “her babies are going to be well taken care of.”
“She lost her first child, I loss my only sister, they loss their mother, so it’s going to be a roller coaster, but we don’t have any steps moving forward,” Erica Chase said. “We just have to stick together as a family, show these babies that they loved, support my mother because she’s not by herself.”
“We got them,” Carletta Chase said.
Prince George’s County Police say that the case is still under investigation which will determine what type of charges will be filed. Canty’s funeral will take place on Tuesday.
