Nearly everyone in a Manassas neighborhood seemed to know the elderly couple who’s lived on the corner of historic Grant Avenue for decades. So they were alarmed to see the home surrounded Monday morning by crime scene tape and police cars.
A 90-year-old man — who has lived here for decades — has died. News4 isn’t identifying him by name because police have not publicly done so yet.
“My mother was sending me pictures through her window and said something was going on, and by the time I got out here, I saw them taking somebody out,” said Manassas resident Simone Reddington. “[…] The crime scene tape has come up. That just adds to the questions.”
Police say just after 7 a.m. Monday, the 91-year-old wife went to a neighbor’s neighbor’s home to tell them her husband was dead.
When Manassas police arrived, they notified the public they were classifying it as a suspicious death. They say there was no sign of forced entry but they say the man’s wife was so traumatized, they were having difficulty getting details from her. They spent the afternoon executing a search warrant with the hope of getting a fuller picture of what happened to cause the man’s death.
“I hope that they figure out what happened,” Reddington said. “I hope that there is no danger to the community, obviously. Yeah, this is very alarming. Something like this never happens in our sweet little town.”
Connie Kincheloe has been keeping vigil outside the home. He’s known the man who died since the two were in high school together in the 1950s. He’s now mourning the loss of a good friend – someone he saw nearly every day as his friend went about his usual routine in the neighborhood.
“He comes out of that house every morning and rides down this street, and down that street and up that street and makes a loop all through Manassas every day,” Kincheloe said. “[…] That’s what he does every day, and then he’ll take his wife out in the afternoon.”
But Kincheloe says his friend took a bad fall a few weeks ago and had to be hospitalized. Now, he wonders if a second fall may have led to his death.
And all day long, cars driven by neighbors have pulled up asking for information and sharing memories.
The man’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office Monday morning where an autopsy will be conducted.
