Arrest made in deadly accidental Southeast DC shooting

After a 15-year-old girl was killed in an accidental shooting Saturday inside a Southeast D.C. apartment, a resident of the apartment has been placed under arrest for firearms charges.

Two 15-year-olds were alone in an apartment on Barnaby Street SE when they started playing with an unsecured firearm, police said. The firearm then went off, striking one of them in the head. She died on the scene.

Metropolitan Police Department Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll said Saturday night they would be charging a resident of the apartment for having an unsecured illegal firearm. The firearm, police said, was also not registered.

News4 spoke to a woman who said she’s a family friend of the teen who allegedly was holding the gun when it fired.

“She’s feeling real bad about what happened,” she said. “She keeps having breakdown moments because she wasn’t clear that it caused her demise.”

Carroll said after the shooting, the second teen dropped the firearm and ran for help. She’s not being charged at this time.

Police are calling the shooting a horrible, tragic accident.

The occupant of the apartment, police said, was a different family friend.

“They were told that the gun was in the house and that it was in the room just in case if anything happened,” the woman said.

The situation has left an entire community mourning the devastating loss of this teen.
