A portion of Seneca Creek and a mile of adjacent trail is closed after a 10-year-old girl was attacked by a beaver, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The girl was canoeing with an organized group at Seneca Creek State Park as part of a summer camp when she was attacked Thursday about 3:30 p.m., officials said. Camp counselors intervened and got the animal away from her. It then escaped into the water.
The attack left the girl with three lacerations on her upper leg, the Maryland DNR said. Her family took her to a hospital.
No one else was injured.
The Maryland DNR and Seneca Creek State Park staff are searching for the beaver. Natural Resources police, local wildlife authorities and Montgomery County Animal Services also have been notified.

The attack happened at a bend in in the creek near Berryville Road, close to the Potomac River, the Maryland DNR said. That area is now closed until further notice. The adjacent parking lot is restricted by traffic cones, and signs are posted to inform parkgoers about the incident, officials said.
Other areas of the park, including the lake area off of Clopper Road in Gaithersburg, remain open.
