A masked intruder ransacked a multi-million-dollar home in Dupont Circle early Thursday morning – all while the homeowner stayed locked inside her bedroom.
By the time D.C. police arrived on scene, whoever was in the house made off with a number of stolen items, including a classic car, paintings and credit cards.
The frightening encounter took place inside a $2.5 million four-story row house on P Street NW.
The elderly homeowner, who News4 is not identifying, said she stayed hidden inside her locked bedroom during the robbery. She was not harmed.
She told News4 she woke up about 4 a.m. to a masked man at her bedroom door and then locked the door. She thought at first she might have been dreaming, but then realized at 6 a.m. it was definitely real when a neighbor called her and told her the front door to her house was wide open, she said.
Police arrived to the house about 6:16 a.m. and discovered the thief or thieves apparently left the house in a hurry. Some of the homeowner’s valuable items were left on the front stoop and at the top of a stairway.
But the suspect or suspects did manage to grab the keys to the homeowner’s tan 1984 Mercedes 380 SL Coup, taking off in the classic car down the alley, the homeowner said.
Antique paintings valued at $30,000 and the homeowner’s purse and credit cards were also stolen, according to a police report.
A second classic Mercedes parked in the alley was left untouched, but the keys were taken.
D.C. police have not yet released any video or photos of any suspects.
