A D.C. woman who has worked as a civil servant for more than 30 years won a $2 million lottery prize – and collected it in a disguise that included a sparkly gold top hat.
The anonymous winner in her 70s spent $50 on an Extreme 500X Fortune scratch-off ticket and won the jackpot, D.C. Lottery officials announced this week.
A photo shows her holding her giant check wearing gold dollar-sign glasses, a face mask and a ruffled collar made of what look like $100 bills.
“We love to see our players win life-changing prizes like this, and we could not be happier for our latest big winner,” D.C. Lottery Executive Director Randy Burnside said in a statement.
The winner, a graduate of Wilson High School and Howard University, told lottery officials she loves her work and had been looking ahead to retirement options.
“This changes everything,” she said.
She bought her ticket at Franklin Liquor & Market at 2723 7th Street NE and chose to get a one-time payment of $1,520,000 instead of payments over 20 years.
