Man accused of shooting, killing ex-girlfriend in Silver Spring

The stillness of a quiet Sunday morning was violently broken by a barrage of gunfire in a Silver Spring neighborhood.

A white Jeep riddled with bullet holes is where police say a 47-year-old woman was sitting when she was allegedly shot by her ex-boyfriend.

The shooting happened shortly after 8 a.m. outside of a home on Imperial Drive.

“We heard like ‘bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,’ about 12,” said Roslyn Brown, a neighbor. “It sounded like a truck backfiring, but it was too much of it to be a truck backfiring.”

Brown has been staying with her brother in a house right across the street where the shooting happened. She described how shocking it was when people realized what had happened.

“The first thing we saw was the jeep over here. It had bullet holes and somebody was on the ground trying to do CPR,” she said. […] A peaceful Sunday morning, and then this happens. Your heart goes out to anybody who loses a child, especially violently like that.”

Montgomery County police say the suspected shooter took off from the scene, but a witness was able to give them a description of the getaway vehicle.

Officers then spotted the suspect in Olney, Maryland. Police say the suspect tried to evade officers, but he ultimately crashed and his car then rolled over. The suspect was then taken to custody and treated for minor injuries.

Amid the pain and grief over the shooting, neighbors came together to offer support. News4 was there as a police officer took flowers that were dropped off by a neighbor to the victim’s family.

As investigators search for a clear motive, the community is working to make sense of what happened.

“Twenty-five years and nothing like this has happened in my neighborhood. This is a very good neighborhood,” said Yanira Alvarado, a neighbor. “ […] Everybody’s sad. Everybody’s very sad that this happened.”

Police have not yet identified the victim or suspect. Neighbors told News4 they believe the victim was visiting her mother, who lives in the home. The investigation is ongoing.
