The man police have in custody in connection with the Brown University mass shooting has been identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson, three senior law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation told NBC News.
Two people were killed in the shooting Saturday, and nine others were injured.
Public records show the man’s residence as of 2024 is an apartment in D.C., according to NBC News. He was also registered to vote in the District as recently as 2023. His party affiliation was listed as “statehood.”
Separate records show he was registered to vote in Wisconsin in 2020 and listed “military” under voter information.
According to a statement from Army Spokesperson, LTC Ruth Castro: “Benjamin W. Erickson was an Infantryman (11B) in the Regular Army from May 2021 to November 2024. He has no deployments and left the Army in the rank of specialist.”
Initial public records searches do not indicate that he had a previous criminal record.
Law enforcement officials say they are looking into what might be an extensive mental health history for Erickson. They say they are also looking into a possible connection to Brown.
