Woman dies after being struck by 2 cars while crossing Route 29 in Virginia

A 53-year-old woman was hit by a car while crossing Route 29 in Merrifield, Virginia, on Monday evening — and was then struck by a second car minutes later.

Surveillance footage shows the woman attempting to cross the busy road at Braxton Wood Court. Video shows her stopped in the middle of the dark road, waiting for cars on the other side to pass, when the driver of a 2020 Nissan Rogue approaches from behind and hits her.

Fairfax County police say the driver of that first striking vehicle, the Rogue, stayed at the scene. But as the woman laid in the road, a second vehicle hit her — and the driver of that second car left the scene.

The woman later died at the hospital. Her identity has not yet been released.

Police are asking for the public’s help as they look for that second driver. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the case.

“You know, it’s horrible,” said Adam Bestoff, who had just gotten home with his son when the crash took place right in front of his house.

Bestoff checked his video cameras when it happened and saw the tragedy.

“It’s very scary,” Bestoff said.

Traffic in that section of Route 29 moves quickly, and there’s a lot of it. Many of the residents in the area say they’re pleading with the county to put a crosswalk in that area.

“They need to do something,” Bestoff said. “I really hope they put in a traffic light over there. There’s been accidents nonstop. It’s not the first time a pedestrian got struck by a vehicle.”

There are also a number of children that live in that area of the neighborhood.

“I think it would be nice,” said Samantha, a nearby resident. “We have a little boy and then two houses over they have two little kids. And one more house, there’s another little kid. So it’s really hard to feel confident to allow our kids to play around here when people are going 60 down the road.”

Fairfax County police were at the scene of the fatal crash on Tuesday to check the surrounding area.

A message sign board has been set up asking anyone with information to reach out to the police.

It’s the 12th fatal pedestrian crash in Fairfax County in 2025, compared to 15 at the same time in 2024.

Police are investigating.
