‘She's all smiles': Ashburn community remembers student killed in crash

It’s a sad time for the Ashburn community. Those who attend Stone Bridge High School alumni and nearby neighbors stopped at the intersection where student Calina Yu, 20, was killed Tuesday to help contribute to a growing memorial — flower bouquets and teddy bears coupled with a circle of prayers for a young soul taken too soon.

Friends described Yu as a passionate classmate who was always kind and excited to come to school.

“The first thought that came to my mind when I heard was there won’t be a next time, and I was floored,” Alexander Hollar said of his initial thoughts after losing his friend and former classmate.

He said she brought joy to everyone she encountered.

“She’s always been a joy to be around. She’s all smiles,” Hollar said. “She’s happy to see you, she’ll come up and hug you and have a good conversation.”

Police say a white Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) maintenance vehicle struck Yu while she was crossing Claiborne Parkway on Tuesday. Investigators say the driver was a LCPS employee and remained on scene.

For some, the intersection of Claiborne Parkway and Portsmouth Boulevard has been a problem for Stone Bridge students and pedestrians.

“At some point, like every year we hear about some sort of accident here or someone got hit, or someone got in a car accident,” Hollar said. “People have been talking about like getting a crossing guard or something here, but the most that we’ve gotten is an unmanned police vehicle.”

In a letter to parents, Stone Bridge High School said, “As you can imagine, we are heartbroken by this loss. A traumatic event such as this can evoke a wide range of emotions, and we know the Loudoun County community joins us in grieving alongside the student’s family.”

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office says the case is still under investigation, which includes going through evidence, crash reconstruction and conducting interviews. Once the investigation is complete, they will determine whether or not charges will be filed.
