1 hurt in shooting at Wootton High School

One person was hurt in a shooting inside Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, Monday afternoon, and the school is on lockdown, police say.

Montgomery County police said officers have taken a person into custody in connection to the shooting. It’s unclear at this time if that person is a suspect.

The school was put on lockdown soon after the shooting happened at about 2:15 p.m., Montgomery County police said.

Montgomery County Public Schools alerted Wootton High School parents and guardians about the shooting via text messages. The school district said the person who was injured was taken to a hospital, according to messages a Wootton parent shared with News4.

Police are asking parents to not come to the school during the lockdown. The school is working with police to arrange pickup for students, MCPS said in an alert message sent to parents.

“Police are on scene. We know this is a high anxiety situtation but parents cannot be at the school at this time,” one alert from MCPS read in part.

School leaders are working on getting students onto buses to reunited with their parents at Robert Frost Middle School.

“Wootton HS Leaders are working to move students, class by class, to buses for transportation to Frost MS. Wootton parents please do not go to Frost MS yet. We are still dismissing students from the middle school. Parents will need to be patient and follow the directions of staff and police,” MCPS told parents in a text message.

Police said all students who rides buses will take their usual routes home.

A group of about a dozen parents parked near Wootton High School waiting for the lockdown to end.

One anxious mother told News4 she drove there after her son texted her about the shooting at 2:30 p.m.

“[It’s] scary. I’m happy that he’s safe, but I’m really sorry for the person who got shot,” she said.

No further information has been given at this time about the shooting.
