Boy hurt after firing gun in Anne Arundel County elementary school

A boy fired a gun inside a Maryland elementary school classroom Wednesday morning, injuring his hand, police say.

The gun went off just before 8:30 a.m. at Freetown Elementary School in Anne Arundel County, police said. The boy’s hand was hurt when the weapon discharged, but police did not say whether a bullet struck the boy’s hand.

Police said the teacher took the weapon, began giving aid to the boy and told school administrators, who called police. None of the other students in the classroom were hurt.

Medics took the boy to a hospital. He has a non-life threatening injury, police said.

Investigators believe the boy got the gun from his home, and they’re looking into the circumstances that led up to the shooting. It’s not clear at this time if the boy’s parents or guardians will be charged with anything.

The school dismissed all students at 11:15 a.m.

“We are working with police and providing support services to students at this time,” Anne Arundel County Public Schools said on social media.

Detectives are asking anyone with information that could help in the investigation to call 410-222-6135 or give an anonymous tip at 410-222-4700.
