Homes near Centreville gas leak deemed safe

The all-clear has been given in Centreville, Virginia.

Nearly two weeks since a house exploded and crews identified a natural gas leak, all of the homes that were evacuated have been deemed safe for families to return.

The stretch of Quail Pond Court is a mess after being dug up in multiple spots over the last two weeks, but the road should be open soon and could be repaved next week.

What’s important is that Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and Washington Gas say they found the leak, fixed it, and after days of checking for gas levels inside of homes.

On Feb. 15, a home on Quail Pond Court in Centreville exploded and a natural gas leak was found in the area. The person inside that home made it out alive and one other person was injured. The National Transportation Safety Board will determine if the gas leak is the cause of the explosion.

As a precaution, more than 50 homes in the area were evacuated. The fire department says as many as four homes had enough natural gas inside of them that they could have all exploded.

Following several days of digging and repairs, Washington Gas representatives told News4 Thursday that they’re confident in the safety of the pipes.

“We’ve conducted multiple safety surveys, multiple leak surveys, so we’re very confident in the safety of the system in this area,” said Jason Weekly with Washington Gas.

But just because there’s no gas detected inside of these homes doesn’t mean everyone is feeling care-free. News4 spoke to a couple of people in the neighborhood who say people need to get back in their homes, but there are still a lot of nervous families given everything that’s happened in the last two weeks.
