Police identify DC man shot and killed by U.S. marshal in Northeast

D.C. police identified a man who died after he was shot by a U.S. marshal on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast.

Julian Marquette Bailey, of Northeast, was killed. He was 43.

Bailey was suspected of making threats with a gun against a woman he got into a “heated dispute” with in a convenience store, a police report says.

The Metropolitan Police Department received a call at about 2:10 p.m. about a man making threats with a gun near Kenilworth Terrace and Hayes Street NE, police said Friday. Sixth District officers arrived and talked with the victim.

She said she argued with a man in Circle Seven and he followed her to car, warned “I’m never bulls—ting!” and pulled out a gun, the police report says. She drove away.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service and U.S. Park Police found the suspect a few blocks away, in the 3700 block of Hayes Street NE, MPD said. The police report adds that Bailey was in a car.

A marshal opened fire and hit Bailey, police said.

News4 video shows several officers on a blocked-off section of Hayes Street NE.

MPD did not release any information on why the marshal shot Bailey.

“No MPD members were on scene at the time of the officer-involved shooting,” police said.

An investigation is underway by an MPD team that investigates all shootings in D.C. involving law enforcement.

The shooting occurred in front of Cesar Chavez Middle Public Charter School, not far from the Minnesota Avenue Metro station. The school was placed on lockdown after the gunfire.
