MCPS gets approval to end school year sooner

Students in Montgomery County, Maryland, will no longer have to stay in school until late June to make up for school days missed because of the harsh winter weather.

Montgomery County Public Schools announced Tuesday the last day of school will be Thursday, June 18 because the Maryland State Board of Education approved the county’s request to waive three days of student attendance.

“This waiver, combined with April 15 as an early-release instructional day, allows MCPS to end the school year earlier than announced while meeting all state-required instructional time expectations,” MCPS said in a release.

Last month, school officials announced they would have to extend the school year to June 25 to make up for the lost days. Wednesday, June 17 was originally set to be the last day of the school year before all of the weather-related closures.

“Our goal is to make learning time meaningful and we know that extending late into June would lose much of that meaning,” MCPS said Tuesday. “We are pleased and appreciative that we can continue to provide all required learning time without extending the school year into late June, better supporting family schedules and avoiding expected high late spring absenteeism.”
