19-year-old charged after shooting outside Blake High School

A 17-year-old remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound and a 19-year-old faces charges after a shooting Wednesday in Blake High School’s parking lot, authorities say. The suspect is not a Montgomery County Public Schools student.

Djibia Gombo, of Silver Spring, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, police said.

Students returned to class on a three-hour delay the day after the shooting during a brawl outside the Silver Spring school. Counselors were available.

Cellphone video circulated among students captured the sound of a shot, plus the physical fight at about 11:30 a.m. School security and the police community engagement officer broke up the fight, which school officials said involved several students. One person dropped a gun, officials said.

“This was precipitated by an unwelcome, uninvited adult coming on to campus, engaging in a physical altercation with young people on this campus, and ultimately led to a gunshot wound and an injury,” Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor said Wednesday.

Detectives are still working to learn who brought the gun to campus and who fired.

Detectives spent hours in the parking lot documenting evidence, and a car was towed from the scene.

The shooting alarmed some students and parents, and Blake remained on a hold status for the rest of the school day.

“I moved from Prince George’s County because Montgomery County offers so much great academics and things. But now, every time you turn around, there’s a fight, there’s a shooting. What is the school system going to do about it?” one parent asked.

Blake made changes to strengthen campus security. Students will not be able to eat lunch outside of the building for the rest of the school year. Outside food deliveries will not be allowed. Staff will take on more responsibilities to strengthen safety.

Gombo was being held at the county’s central processing unit and awaited a bond hearing.
