A boy suffered a gunshot wound during a fight at a high school in Silver Spring, Maryland, Wednesday morning, police said.

School security and a Montgomery County police community engagement officer (CEO) at Blake High School broke up the fight about 11:30 a.m., police said.

“Together, they managed to stop any further activity, detain one individual and also recover a handgun that one of the subjects dropped during the fight,” Montgomery County Police Chief Marc Yamada said.

A 19-year-old man was detained.

Soon after, a male juvenile showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound suffered in the fight, police said. He is expected to survive his injuries.

“This was precipitated by an unwelcome, uninvited adult coming on to campus, engaging in a physical altercation with young people on this campus, and ultimately led to a gunshot wound and an injury,” Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor said.

The school was placed on hold status for the rest of the day, but dismissal was on time.

Blake High will start on a delay Thursday. There will be increased police presence and counseling available at the school for as long as deemed necessary, Taylor said.

No school security staff nor the CEO were injured.

The connection between the school and the participants in the fight is unclear.

Police did not provide information about any charges.
