Metro worker killed in Friendship Heights was loving father of 4, wife says

A Metro worker who was shot and killed as he was leaving work in Friendship Heights was a loving husband and father of four, his wife says.

Robert Stokes was leaving his job at the WMATA Western Bus Division early Thursday morning when police say Terrell Cross shot him. Police said Cross, who also worked for Metro, then turned the gun on himself.

Stokes’ wife, Kristal Stokes, said she first learned her husband of nearly eight years had been killed when her phone rang that morning.

“She was like, Yeah, we wanted to offer our condolences. And I was like, ‘What news are you talking about?’ And she’s like, ‘Oh, nobody has contacted you?’ And I was like, No.”

Then, police showed up at her door.

“That’s when I lost it, because I was, I was freaking out, but I was still, like, holding it together. But when they say he was murdered – because I was thinking, like, car accident because he’s a bus driver,” she said.

Kristal said she didn’t know Cross, but said the shooting was the result of a personal dispute between the two men.

She said Stokes was a loving person.

“He was very quiet, but if he knew you, he, he’s going to talk your head off and be silly with you,” Kristal Stokes said.

The couple shared a 5-year-old daughter and Robert had three older children from a previous relationship.

“I’m going to continue to be a mother to all of the kids. You know, they’re my kids for life, no matter what. … and they’re my daughter’s siblings, and she loves them. So I love them too,” she said.
