Officer kills 1 of 3 dogs that attacked 2 women in Edmonston

A group of three dogs attacked two women in Edmonston Tuesday morning, authorities said. An officer shot and killed one dog and caught another, and the third dog ran away.

First, the dogs attacked a woman at Kenilworth Avenue and Decatur Street, Prince George’s County police said. Officers responded at about 8:30 a.m. The victim had been bitten and was treated on the scene.

Then, police received a call that the dogs were attacking another woman nearby. She was taken to a hospital for bite wounds police described as non-life-threatening.

The dogs were seen running in the area. An officer found them attacking a fourth dog.

“As the officer approached to check on the condition of the fourth dog, the three dogs came back around the corner of a house where they had run. In fear for his safety, the officer discharged his weapon, striking and killing one dog,” police said in a statement.

The officer used a dog pole to catch one of the dogs, and the third dog ran off. Animal Control took the captured dog.

No information was immediately released on the dogs’ owner, whether the owner could face charges, the dogs’ breeds or a description of the dog still on the loose. It wasn’t immediately clear how badly the two women and fourth dog were hurt.

The police department’s internal affairs division will investigate.
