Amigos, the Laurel restaurant that was shut down after a sprawling Cinco de Mayo party ended with a triple shooting and a stabbing out in the parking lot, has announced that it’s reopening.
Police said the celebration May 5 had gotten out of control.
The closure came because of alleged permit violations related to security and other issues. The city of Laurel said the restaurant was out of compliance. Now the city and the restaurant have come to an agreement.
The city of Laurel suspended Amigos’ operating permit May 8, temporarily shutting down the popular Mexican restaurant. Patrons posted on social media they were inside Amigos eating when it was shut down May 8 and they were forced to leave.
According to the city, the restaurant was shut down due to:
- misrepresentation of the security plan
- misrepresentation involving the board of license commissioners, which deals with the liquor license
- misrepresentation of the intended use of the space
The closure came with a 30-day window for the restaurant to come into compliance, but it seems like it got straightened out much faster than that.
Laurel police have identified the suspect in the shooting as Michael Dakernu Dennah, 24, of Beltsville. An arrest warrant has been issued, but police are still looking for him.
A total of five people were injured in the two separate incidents outside the party. Guests were celebrating inside and outside Amigos, with the crowd spilling into the parking lot of the shopping center, when shots were fired. Three people were struck and wounded, detectives said.
As police were dealing with that situation, there was a second unrelated incident: a stabbing in which two people were hurt. Police described the stabbing as “domestic‑related” and arrested a 26-year-old Howard County man in connection with the stabbing.
As for the suspect in the shooting, Dennah is wanted on three counts each of first- and second-degree attempted murder, as well as weapons-related charges, police said.
“Dennah should be considered armed and dangerous. Do not approach him,” police said in a news release. “Call law enforcement immediately.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Laurel Police Department at 301-498-0092 or email LPDtips@laurel.md.us.
All five victims were expected to survive, police said after the incidents.
