‘Big and great things:' DC high school celebrates every senior's acceptance to college

The annual Decision Day celebration at KIPP D.C. Legacy College Prep had a little extra pep on Wednesday as the D.C. high school celebrated a major milestone.

Every member of the school’s senior class got into at least one college.

The class of 2026 announced where they’ll be headed during the celebration. But many of the students also took it as an opportunity to think about giving back.

“I want to give back to my community,” said student Gionni Foreman. “My community helped me out so much — from my neighbors to my teachers to my peers. I just want to give back any way that I can.”

Foreman is student body president and captain of the football team. The southeast D.C. native got a prestigious full-ride Gates scholarship, an honor that was only awarded to 750 students nationwide from a pool of more than 61,000 applicants.

In the fall, he’ll attend Hampton University. After that, he hopes to get into nonprofit or business work, or perhaps become a councilmember.

Foreman says he and his friends all dream of making a difference in D.C.

“We actually made a pact to all get our masters in five years and come back to D.C.,” Foreman said. “We’re nerds like that. So it’s kind of sad, but it’s also nice. We’re all gonna do big and great things.”

That goal is also shared by Jahari Gross, who plans to attend Georgetown on the pre-med track.

“I will be the first person to actually finish college in my family,” Gross said, “I’ll be the first person to become a doctor in my family as well.”

Gross says her dreams were inspired by watching Grey’s Anatomy.

“That left a big impact on me,” she said. “I live in D.C., you see a lot of that. You go out in your community, people getting hurt and stuff. The fact that these people on this show were helping people, it made me want to do that as well.”

And as KIPP D.C. Legacy College Prep celebrates every senior getting into at least one college, the students say the camaraderie will last far beyond the classroom.

“I’m so proud,” Foreman said. “One of my favorite things is seeing my friends happy and successful, so today, decision day, seeing everybody come, repping their swag, I almost dropped a tear.”
