The mother of a newborn who was found abandoned in a park in Stafford County, Virginia, was found and will not be charged, authorities say.
An “alert citizen” found the newborn in Overlook Park in the Embrey Mill area at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said. The baby was healthy but alone.
Investigators rushed to the area as they searched for the mother. Neighbors were told to check video from their doorbell cameras.
In an update Thursday, the sheriff’s office said they found the infant’s mother and both she and the baby are safe. They did not release her name or age but said she will not face charges.
“In every case we investigate, the Sheriff’s Office carefully evaluates all information and evidence to determine whether charges are appropriate. This case was handled no different,” they said in a statement. “In close partnership with the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney, we have determined that no charges will be filed related to this incident at this time.”
No information was released on why the mother left the baby or how investigators found her.
The sheriff’s office shared information on Safe Haven laws designed to protect newborns. A parent may legally surrender “an unharmed infant within 30 days of birth, with no questions asked and without fear of criminal repercussions” at any hospital or fire station, they said.
“We encourage anyone who may find themselves in crisis or in need of assistance to know that help is available to protect both parents and children,” they said.
People who live in the area told News4 they were disturbed to learn about what happened. One woman described herself as “dumbfounded.” Another said the case brings tears to her eyes and that she hopes the mom is OK.
“I can’t imagine what she’s going through,” she said.
