D.C.’s Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is shut down during Friday evening’s rush hour after a protester scaled the bridge with what appears to be a large banner. Police negotiators are on the scene.
Video shows someone unfurling a long piece of fabric at the top of one of the bridge’s steel arches.
The protester objected to war, AI and the Trump administration. The same man scaled the bridge in June 2022 and stayed there overnight, leading to extended closures.
All eastbound and westbound lanes of the bridge were closed as of about 3:30 p.m.
The Washington Nationals will play nearby at Nationals Park at 6:45 p.m.
DC Fire and EMS confirmed they’re performing a high-angle rescue on the bridge. Police asked people to avoid the area during their response.
