It’s Pride Month’s biggest weekend in Washington, D.C., and we’re bringing you the Pride Parade festivities live in the video player above when things step off.
The Capital Pride Parade is a huge event every year in the District. This year, the Capital Pride Alliance — the organizing group behind the parade and numerous other festivities — chose the theme Exist. Resist. Have the Audacity!
It’s a striking choice as the capital celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and it emphasizes LGBTQIA+ Pride Month’s role as part history lesson, part celebration and part call to action.
For the 51st anniversary of Pride celebrations in the District, here are 4 things to expect:
- The Pride parade is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and end by 8 p.m.
- The parade begins at 12th and T Streets NW and ends at Pennsylvania Ave. and 14th Street NW. The 1.4-mile route will go down 14th Street and around Thomas Circle. Grandstand seating is sold out, but there are plenty of spots along the route to watch.
- Monroe Alise, an actress and trans advocate, and singer David Archuleta will be the grand marshals.
- Transit is the best way to get to the parade. Metro says stations near the parade route include U Street or Archives (Green or Yellow lines) and McPherson Square, Metro Center or Federal Triangle (Orange, Silver, and Blue lines). Red Line trains also stop at Metro Center. Here’s more info on transit.
Other Pride events this weekend include the 17th Street Pride Block Party in the historic home of the District’s LGBTQ+ celebrations; the Capital Pride Festival and the Capital Pride Concert headlined by Maren Morris.
Not open for Pride this year? Dupont Circle Park, the historic heart of D.C.’s LGBTQIA+ community.
The National Park Service (NPS) fenced off the park and plans to keep it closed during Capital Pride celebrations this weekend, listing public safety and protection of the historic park as reasons.
Crews fenced off the park Friday morning. The plan is to keep it closed until Sunday at 6 p.m., according to the NPS’ website. Learn more about the changes and get any updates here.
