A search and rescue crew has recovered the body of a 16-year-old boy who went missing while swimming in the Potomac River near Great Falls early Thursday.
The teen’s body was discovered in the area of Sandy Landing about 9 a.m. Friday, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue said. That’s the same area where the teen was last seen in the water after swimming with friends.
Authorities have not named the teen, but said he is from Maryland.
Crews from Maryland, Virginia and U.S. Park Police searched for hours Thursday in intense heat. Chopper4 video shows multiple search teams and a K-9 on the water. An underwater drone and a dive team were planned.
A call for help came in at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
“We are actively looking for the victim right now,” someone can be heard saying on a dispatch call.
The Upper Potomac Riverkeeper said it usually takes a while for crews to search the river because of how difficult the conditions are. They urged people to be careful around the water.
Just weeks ago, crews searched a nearby section of the river for a college student who went missing while swimming with friends near the Billy Goat Trail. His body was recovered two days later.
Officials have recently reminded people that swimming in the Potomac River is not allowed, and though the water can look calm, it can be as deep as 30 feet and the currents can change quickly.
Water safety experts say to wear a life vest, supervise young children and to never swim alone. Bacteria levels also can pose a risk.
