Crews have found the body of a 25-year-old man who went missing in the Potomac River south of Great Falls earlier this week. He is the third person to die after swimming in that area of the river this summer.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue said its swift water rescue team found the man’s body at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The team used sonar and camera imagery to find his body in an area that wasn’t far from where he was last seen.
Teams from Fairfax, Loudoun and Montgomery counties rushed to the river Tuesday afternoon after someone reported the man disappeared in the water.
Officials said the area where he went missing can get up to 50 feet deep.
Authorities have not released the name of the man.
Two young people died in separate accidents in the same area of river earlier this summer. In June, 20-year-old Nazir Bell, a rising senior at Towson University, was found dead after swimming near the Billy Goat Trail with friends.
Earlier this month, a 16-year-old was found dead after swimming with friends in the Sandy Landing area.
Officials warn that swimming in the Potomac is not allowed and seemingly calm water can have powerful currents.
