A veteran and outspoken critic of the National Guard’s deployment in Washington, D.C., is suing over her detainment, saying Guard members pinned her down to the ground and significantly injured her.
Anna King was sitting on her front patio in D.C. on May 8, when three Guard members walked through her gate and told her she was being detained before they “violently restrained her,” the American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement Wednesday.
A D.C. police officer who arrived later told one of King’s neighbors that King was suspected of assaulting a Guard member two days earlier, according to the filing. The ACLU said the claim is baseless and King was never charged.
The ACLU of D.C. filed the lawsuit on behalf of King, who is a retired Army captain and Purple Heart recipient.
King is seeking $3 million from the Idaho National Guard.
A spokesperson for the National Guard’s Joint Task Force–District of Columbia said in a statement to News4 it is aware of the legal claim.
“During a presence patrol on May 8, National Guard service members recognized an individual in connection with an alleged assault against service members that occurred on May 6. The service members detained the individual and notified the Metropolitan Police Department, who responded and made the arrest,” the statement said in part.
