Ex-firefighter won't face more jail time in junior firefighter sex abuse case

A former Prince George’s County firefighter accused of sexually abusing a junior firefighter in the 1990s won’t face more jail time as part of a plea deal.

John Inman, 63, was a paid firefighter when he sexually assaulted a male junior firefighter between the years of 1991 and 1996 when the victim was between the ages of 13 and 17, investigators said.

The assaults took place at multiple locations, including at the Hyattsville fire station on Belcrest Road and inside Inman’s home. The victim told police Inman would drive him from the firehouse to Cole Field House on the campus of the University of Maryland and abuse him there.

As soon as the allegations were reported to police in 2024, the state’s attorney, police and the fire department say they launched an investigation into the assaults and abuse.

Inman retired from the fire department in 2017 and was living in South Carolina when then turned himself into police last year.

He was sentenced to 45 years with all but 388 days suspended, which is the time he previously served in jail after he was arrested. Inman will be on supervised probation for five years and is required to register as a sex offender.

The judge in the case was adamant she wasn’t in favor of the plea deal when it was presented to her. Before sentencing, she talked about Inman’s behavior in the courtroom and how he seemed disinterested in what victims had to say.

Four victim impact statements were read in court Tuesday, talking about the trauma and pain experienced for years.

“Although decades have passed, the profound impact of these crimes on the survivors has not diminished,” State’s Attorney Tara Jackson said. “We’re grateful to the survivors whose courage made this prosecution possible as they were willing to stand up and describe what happened to them years ago.”

Jackson encourages any other victims to contact Prince George’s County police.
