Police kill man allegedly armed with gun at Gaithersburg bus stop

Police shot and killed a man Sunday night who allegedly was armed with a gun at a Gaithersburg bus stop.

Not long before 7 p.m., Gaithersburg police and the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) received a call saying a man was loading a gun at a bus stop in front of the Montgomery Village Plaza on the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road.

Officers from Montgomery County and Gaithersburg attempted to deescalate the situation and also clear people from the area, but police said the man “took actions which caused the officers to discharge their service weapons,” according to a MCPD release. It was not immediately clear what those actions were.

Officers provided medical aid until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue took over, but the man was eventually pronounced dead, police said.

No officers or bystanders were injured in the shooting, according to the MCPD release.

A handgun was also recovered from the scene, police said.

What led up to the shooting is under investigation by the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, which investigates fatal encounters with police per Maryland law.

The officers involved are on administrative leave as the investigation goes on.

“We want to extend our deepest sympathies to the family involved. We want to extend our sympathies to their loved ones, to their friends, and they are receiving devastating news this evening,” said Captain Cody Fields with MCPD at a press conference Sunday night. “We have to acknowledge that that’s the case, and we ask for privacy and respect to be extended to the family and those that are involved in the incident.”
