Nearly six years of pain, sleepless nights and hope for justice led to this moment for the parents of 22-year-old Andre Cox Jr.
Andre Cox Jr. was shot and killed in October 2020 near the Overland apartment complex in Landover, Maryland. Investigators believe he was targeted.
Since then, his parents have worked to bring attention to his case while seeking justice for their son.
“It got to a point where we thought actually this day may never come, so to actually be here sitting today and being able to actually witness it — God kept us along long enough to see this through,” his father, Andre Cox Sr., said at a press conference Wednesday.
The man who is believed to be the alleged shooter was taken into custody on Tuesday in D.C., according to Prince George’s County police.
“We were close a lot of times. We kept the family informed. Time and time again, he was able to slip away — but not yesterday,” said Prince George’s County Interim Police Chief George Nader.
For half a decade, Dayvon Gordon had been on the loose, even changing up his appearance, according to police. It still isn’t clear if Gordon remained in the area during the entire time or if someone helped him while he was on the run, police said.
“We utilize every aspect that we can to identify individuals. He was identified very early on within 30 days,” Nader said. “[…] We do know that he had been in this area on multiple occasions, and on multiple occasions, we were extraordinarily close to making that apprehension but just weren’t able to do it.”
The shooting involved an AK-47, according to police. Gordon was facing weapon-related charges in the District from 2016 prior to the landover shooting in 2020.
Gordon is facing several charges, including first and second degree murder.
Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the deadly shooting.
As for Andre Cox Jr.’s parents, they said they’re one step closer to justice for their son — yet a void remains in their hearts.
“My son will be able to rest at peace,” said his mother, Shaketa Robinson. “Closure — We’ll be able to get through day by day. We cannot say that it’s closure for us. Even though we go through the process, it still won’t be closure. However, we’ll be able to get through this day by day.”
