Storms that raged through Hyattsville on July 4 sent a family running for their lives and left their home severely damaged. The storm sent a tree crashing through a window, leaving a 12-year-old girl seriously hurt.
The family described the moment the tree slammed into their home as they watched a World Cup match.
“We were sitting in the living room watching the match with the family gathered around, but suddenly we saw the tree coming down on us. We tried to run, but the tree crashed right through the window,” José Alfredo told Telemundo 44 in Spanish as he used crutches, standing in his badly damaged apartment.
Alfredo said that just before the chaos, he had been watching the rain fall when everything suddenly changed. A tree crashed into the house and they tried to run.
His wife tossed their young son to him, so he could protect the child as the tree hit their backs.
“I thought the whole building was going to collapse. There was a loud crash, and we ran out just as the [second] tree came down on top of my niece,” Alfredo said. “She was badly hurt. She suffered a severe cut near her knee; you could see the bone. The tree fell on her leg as she was running out.”
Video shows pouring rain and powerful winds. Screams can be heard.
Telemundo 44 spoke with the apartment complex’s management team, who said the storm knocked down several trees and caused significant damage to the homes of three families. They said they are working to remove the fallen trees and clear affected access areas, and that they will begin necessary repairs on the damaged buildings.
Alfredo’s niece had to undergo surgery and remained in a hospital as of Monday.
