A Montgomery County woman charged with murdering two of her young children more than a decade ago was ordered Tuesday to be moved back to a secure psychiatric facility.
Catherine Hoggle is accused of killing 3-year-old Sarah and 2-year-old Jacob in 2014. Their bodies have never been found.
Rearrested on murder charges this summer
Previously, Hoggle was found not competent to stand trial multiple times due to her severe mental illness.
After being held for years at a psychiatric facility, she was released to a group home in July but then was rearrested on the murder charges.
Hoggle has been held at the county jail in Clarksburg since then.
Judge orders Hoggle moved from jail back to psychiatric facility
In a Rockville courtroom Tuesday afternoon, Hoggle’s attorney pushed to have her moved out of the county jail. The attorney argued that, because of Hoggle’s mental illness, the jail is not the right place for her, and the judge agreed.
A prosecutor argued that Hoggle seemed to be flourishing at the jail, but her attorney said her medications were at times not being administered properly.
There will be another hearing in December to determine once again whether she is competent to stand trial on the murder charges.
She is expected to be transferred to the Clifton T. Perkins psychiatric facility, where she had been held for years, but it’s not yet known exactly that will happen.
Where are the Hoggle children? Their father has never stopped searching
The Hoggle children’s father, Troy Turner, has spent the past decade trying to find them.
“I feel like my kids will be searched for until they’re found, or I’ll die looking for them. It could turn into 30, 40 years, or however long I’m blessed to live,” the children’s father, Troy Turner, told News4 earlier this year.
According to multiple law enforcement sources, Hoggle drove off with Jacob and Sarah separately, returning each time without them. Investigators say she has told various stories about where they went: She took them for pizza. She took them to a friend’s house. She dropped them off at day care.
When Turner tried to take her to the police, Hoggle herself disappeared for several days. Eventually, she was found and taken into custody with a changed appearance. But Sarah and Jacob were not with her.
As detectives, the family and the community searched for the children without success, Hoggle was held on abduction charges. The charges were upgraded to murder in 2017, but they were dropped in 2022 after she was repeatedly found not competent to stand trial.
Hoggle was indicted this summer and rearrested after the state found out she was discharged from the psychiatric facility, according to prosecutors.
