2 women struck, 1 killed in Petworth trash truck hit-and-run

A woman was killed and another injured when they were struck by a trash truck in Northwest D.C. Friday afternoon, police said.

The women were on an electric bike or scooter when the truck hit them at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street about 2 p.m., police said.

The driver of the truck did not stay at the scene, but it is unclear if the driver knew two people had been struck.

A witness described the truck for police, including the name on the side.

Police found the truck in Maryland and were interviewing the driver as of about 6 p.m. No charges against the driver were filed immediately.

Michael Howard said he had just left a store in the area and went to the scene to help.

“I saw two things in the street,” he said. “Looked like trash bags, but it was bodies. So, when I went down and I looked and saw they were bodies, I ended up stopping traffic so that they won’t run them over again.”
