Thousands of vibrant tulips will speckle the National Mall this month — and they’re all free for visitors to take home.
Tulip Day marks the beginning of spring with a massive, 150,000-flower display of freshly bloomed tulips in the heart of D.C. The event is from 11:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.
Ticket-holding visitors will be able to pick their own bouquet, with a limit of 10 flowers per person.
The event, hosted by Dutch flower bulb trading company Royal Anthos, is the first of its kind in D.C — and it showed.
Tickets sold out fast on Monday, crashing the Tulip Day website in the process.
A total of 12,500 tickets were available, and they were all claimed by 9:30 a.m., Courtney Winter, the event’s spokesperson, told News4.
“Due to the large influx of people trying to access them, both the website and the ticketing system were overloaded several times,” she said. “Our sincere apologies for this.”
Tickets were expected to go quickly.
“Sharing the beauty of tulips with visitors at such a meaningful location is incredibly special,” Mark Jan Terwindt, the CEO of Royal Anthos, said in a statement.
The petal-filled day is sponsored by the European Union and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which is known for its colorful seas of tulips that bloom each spring.
“Tulip Day brings people together through a simple, joyful moment stepping into a field of flowers, enjoying a breath of spring, and taking a little of that beauty home,” Terwindt said.

In recognition of the United States’ 250th Anniversary, garden designs will incorporate the number 250 into arrangements.
The tulips featured are grown in the United States, with bulbs supplied by European producers.
Whether you’re picking them for yourself, a partner, a family member or your best friend, tulips come in a variety of colors, each with its own meaning.
Once the website boots back up, visitors get more info at tulipday.eu.
Still hoping for a tulip-filled spring? Burnside Farms’ tulip and daffodil fields are expected to open in late March, if the weather cooperates.
