3 high school seniors killed in Spotsylvania car crash

Three students from Spotsylvania High School died in a car crash late on Friday night, the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office said.

The school community is now spending spring break mourning the loss of three seniors.

Just before midnight on March 27, deputies responded to a single-car crash in the 5300 block of Lewiston Road and found three people inside the crashed vehicle.

All three of the victims were declared dead at the scene.

The names of the seniors have not yet been shared with the public, but their families have been notified. The crash victims were 18, 17 and 17 years old, and all getting ready to graduate from Spotsylvania High in the next few months.

The crash is under investigation by the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Department, but no preliminary details about the crash or its cause were shared.

Robert Marchetti, principal of Spotsylvania High, shared a statement with families and other community members on Saturday, including a list of normal responses that children may have to grief.

“The faculty and staff of Spotsylvania High School were deeply saddened to learn of the deaths of three of our seniors as a result of a car accident on Saturday, March 28, 2026,” Marchetti said in his statement.

“Over the break, we encourage you to check-in with your child regarding the deaths of their peers. Children respond to death differently and their reaction will depend on the relationship that they had with the person who died, their age, and prior experiences with loss.

Your child may:

  • Appear unaffected
  • Ask questions about the death repeatedly
  • Be angry or aggressive
  • Have difficulty sleeping or eating
  • Be sad or depressed
  • Become afraid
  • Be withdrawn or moody

“The best thing that you can do is listen to your child and let them lead the discussion,” the statement continues. “When they bring up the topic of grief and loss, answer their questions simply and honestly.”

The school will have counseling staff available when students return from spring break on April 6.
