‘It's wild': Residents baffled by pipe bombs discovered at Ft. Washington Park

Ft. Washington Park is back open Wednesday after several pipe bombs were discovered there earlier this week. But the mystery of who made and planted the pipe bombs at the Maryland park remains.

Residents in the area who frequent the park were baffled by the news of the pipe bombs.

“It’s crazy because it is so pristine out here and there’s not a lot of people. Why would you target this, this park? It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” Jim Cagle told News4. He was one of the first to return to the park to walk his dog Maggie.

Fort Washington Park has been closed since last Sunday afternoon, when the first pipe bomb was discovered. There was an extensive search and in all, nine pipe bombs were discovered.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said the devices were not left at the park recently. Nobody was hurt by the pipe bombs.

Ashley Sparks often walks her dogs at the park. She said it’s strange to think she could have walked near something dangerous.

“It’s wild, you know. I’m here, like, almost every day. Apparently, they’ve been here for a while, too, so I might’ve been walking by them. And it’s just crazy,” Sparks said.

The ATF said in a statement they “have no reason to believe that there is an active threat to the public.” All evidence will be examined at its national lab.

Anyone with potentially relevant information is asked to call 1-888-ATF-BOMB.
