1 child dead, another seriously hurt after Northeast DC shooting

One young person died and another is seriously hurt after police believe two shooters opened fire Tuesday afternoon near a food truck in Northeast D.C. The victims are 12 and 13, the interim police chief said, according to initial information.

The name of the child who died was not immediately released.

An intense investigation is underway near DC-295.

The victims were shot in the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE, police said. Officers responded to the block at about 3:30 p.m. Both victims were hit by multiple gunshots.

“There was a large number of shots that was fired in a very small period of time,” Interim Chief of Police Jeffery Carroll said.

Witnesses told News4 people were standing near a yellow food truck in a convenience store parking lot when at least one person in a car started shooting.

One victim was pronounced dead, and the other was rushed to a hospital.

Police are searching for two shooters and asked anyone with potentially relevant information to contact police.

All southbound lanes of DC-295 were shut down at Burroughs Avenue NE and later reopened. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes.

One car with bullet holes could be seen in the area. Another had a flat tire.

Police asked people to avoid the area.

Carroll extended his condolences to the boys’ families amid a “very tragic situation.”
