At least 2 people shot after gunfire reported in Riverdale, College Park

At least two people have been shot after gunfire was reported in multiple locations in Prince George’s County on Friday afternoon, authorities say. Witnesses said they saw a car flip and its driver get out and open fire.

Chopper4 video shows police responses at locations in Riverdale and College Park. A Chevrolet Impala could be seen flipped upside down at 67th Avenue and Patterson Street in Riverdale.

Two witnesses told News4 the Impala driver was speeding, hit a car and flipped. They said they saw a man get out of the car with a long gun, start firing and run. Shell casings could be seen in the roadway.

A second shooting occurred at Greenbelt Road and Kenilworth Avenue, police said. A third occurred at the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Riverdale Road.

Police told News4 they couldn’t immediately share details on what happened, as they work to gather evidence.

One person has critical injuries; another is less seriously hurt, authorities said.

The University of Maryland told students and staff that police responded to Rhode Island Avenue and Lakeland Road after reports of the sound of gunfire.

“Witness reported that a suspect in a dark color sedan fired 3 shots in the air and then left the scene,” they said, adding that the person was believed to have headed east, away from campus.

Schools were put on lockdown and later returned to regular status.

Prince George’s County police said one person is in custody and one weapon was recovered “after reports of shots fired in multiple locations in the northern portion of the county.”

“This is a very active, evolving incident,” police said, adding that people should expect traffic delays.
