DC's public golf courses will remain open under new deal

D.C.’s public golf courses will remain open after the Department of the Interior and the National Links Trust came to an agreement Friday night.

The announcement comes days after a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration can proceed with maintenance work at the East Potomac Golf course but said it can’t shut down the course or overhaul it without proper notice.

This agreement is welcoming news to golfers across the District who say they enjoy playing on the golf courses.

“I was relieved. I want to know the details of whatever deal has been struck,” John Lord, a D.C. golfer, told News4. “I think it’s incredibly important that we maintain affordable, accessible golf, and this is a historic golf course,”

“The challenge is to upgrade it and keep it affordable for the people in the District,” said another golfer.

“It’s handy, it’s convenient and it’s inexpensive, and it’s a nice place for the people around here,” another said.

On Friday evening, the Department of the Interior made the announcement about the agreement, which will keep the District’s three public golf courses open to the public.

The National Links Trust announced that they will continue operating the East Potomac, Langston, and Rock Creek Park golf courses for the foreseeable future.

The deal includes a new long-term lease for the nonprofit. Part of the agreement includes the Interior Department overseeing several renovations like new facilities and renovations at Rock Creek Park Golf Course and the Langston Golf Course.

Back in December, the Trump administration canceled National Links’ 50-year contract that allowed the group to oversee D.C.’s public golf courses.

Part of this deal includes working with the Washington Commanders Foundation to expand workforce, mentorship and scholarship programs at Langston Golf Course.
