Lewis Ferebee, DC's longest-serving schools chancellor, to step down

After eight years leading D.C. Public Schools (DCPS), Dr. Lewis Ferebee is stepping down from his job as chancellor.

Ferebee, the school system’s longest-serving chancellor, said he’s taking a new position in the private sector. He’s leaving to become chief executive of the nonprofit EdReports.

At an event Wednesday highlighting the school system’s top ranking for post-pandemic recovery in English and math, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser praised Ferebee for his achievements, including DCPS’s 78% graduation rate. That’s up from 69% a decade ago.

Asked why he has chosen to move on now, Ferebee said he has had the best boss and support system and he’s aiming a little higher.

“I’ve been very fortunate to serve here in the nation’s capital, and for me, this is an opportunity to go to an altitude a little bit higher, to a national level and to influence the conversation around high-quality instructional materials, which has also been a part of the DCPS recovery journey as well,” he said.

Bowser praised Ferebee’s leadership, saying ten DCPS high schools earned a place on the College Board’s 2025 AP program school honor roll. She went on to boast enrollment is now at 52,000 students – the highest in the city’s history.

Ferebee, the mayor noted, also secured the highest philanthropic investment in the history of the school system to redesign high schools.

Ferebee was appointed by Bowser in 2018. In the fall, Bowser announced she wouldn’t seek a fourth term as mayor.

During a recent mayoral primary debate, candidates Janeese Lewis George, Kenyan McDuffie and Gary Goodweather said they wanted to see more work on early literacy, attendance, teacher retention and special education.

They were all asked if they would retain Ferebee. Lewis George, McDuffie and Goodweather each said no.

In a letter to staff, Ferebee said his last day would be June 19.

Bowser says she will appoint an interim chancellor to take his place.
