Suspect in killing of Wunder Garten employee was previously convicted of murder

A beer garden in Northeast D.C. has reopened a week after one of its employees was stabbed to death while doing his job.

Marvin Urquhart was working security at Wunder Garten in NoMa when police say he got into an argument with a man who wanted to come in after last call.

Urquhart was one of those workers who had that special something adored by customers and staff.

“He brought warmth, kindness, humor, and positivity everywhere he went,” according to a statement released by Wunder Garten. “Anyone who crossed paths with Urquhart remembers his bright smile, welcoming spirit, and genuine care for others. His courage and selflessness in his final moments reflect the incredible person he was every single day.”

According to a court charging document filed in the case, early last saturday morning, the suspect — 50-year-old Cadoza Simms — used a switchblade knife to stab Urquhart when the two got into a dispute over whether simms could come into the beer garden after hours.

The court document says two weeks before the stabbing, Simms was also denied entry around closing time because he was intoxicated.

Surveillance camera footage shows Urquhart may not have known he was stabbed. For nearly five minutes after the attack, he sat at the bar and was on his phone before collapsing.

Urquhart was so well known and loved in the neighborhood, a local dog care began a fundraiser and has so far raised nearly $15,000.

Court records for Simms do not have much information in the murder he was accused of in 1996, but records show simms pleaded guilty to killing Marvin Adams in April of 1996 and was sentenced to consecutive 5 to 15-year terms in prison. Simms was released in 2020.

The 50-year-old is being held without bond.
